Laura Devlin endorsed for State Representative in the 134th district

Laura Devlin Runs for State Representative, Endorsed by Hwang

Focuses on Affordability, Jobs and Transportation

FAIRFIELD, CT – June 11, 2014 – Long-time Fairfield resident Laura Devlin has won the Republican Party endorsement to run for the open House of Representatives seat in the 134rd Assembly District, which represents Fairfield and Trumbull.

Current State Representative Tony Hwang, who has held the seat for six years, is vacating the seat to run for State Senate. Hwang commented, “I have known Laura for the past 6 years and I have valued and respected her perspective on the issues of transportation, jobs and economic growth, and fiscally responsible governmental spending. Most importantly, I know Laura as a responsible and practical person who practices a philosophy of public service above self, toward making a positive difference for everyone in our community. I strongly support her.”

Devlin, a member of Fairfield’s RTM representing District 3, is a small business owner and former Metro North commuter. She’s a fiscal conservative who believes in responsible government, and wants to bring her professional experience and business knowledge to the State Capitol.

Devlin said, “I am honored to be nominated to represent the citizens of Fairfield and Trumbull in Hartford. In January, Connecticut will start its biennial budget process and I want to be part of that process in order to look out for the best interests of our citizens. I believe that Connecticut can once again be a great state in which to live, work and retire, but the current tax and spend policy does not work, and is crippling our economy. We have the highest debt and unfunded liabilities per capita and one of the highest tax rates in the nation. As a result, Connecticut is becoming unaffordable to the average person and our future is in jeopardy. We are losing jobs and residents are leaving for lower cost states. Further, without a reliable transportation infrastructure (rail and highway), people and businesses will not choose Connecticut,” added Devlin.

Devlin, also a member of the Fairfield RTM Finance Committee, was previously elected to Fairfield’s Board of Assessment Appeals where she served for two years as secretary. She has also been actively involved in supporting non-profit, education and professional organizations including the Fairfield 375 Food Drive, Dress for Success, Fairfield College Preparatory School Bellarmine Guild, Girl Scouts of America, Green Chimney’s, Public Relations Society of America, and Society of Human Resources Management.

Laura holds a B.S. from the University of Illinois and an Executive Master in HR Leadership from Rutgers University. She and her husband of 24 years, Phil Harkawik, have two children who were educated in Fairfield schools – William, a graduate of Fairfield College Preparatory School, and Elizabeth, a graduate of Fairfield Warde High School.
